San Diego beaches bring a sense of happiness to everyone, no matter their taste. They offer so many fun activities such as water sports, making sand castles with the kids, or bird watching.

The Best Carlsbad Beaches
Carlsbad State Beach / Tamarack Surf Beach
Some people call it Carlsbad State Beach, while others know it as Tamarack Surf Beach. Regardless, it’s a stunning stretch of sand that local families and surfers can’t get enough of.
This one-mile shoreline is loved for its range of things to do on a warm summer day. You can take a surfboard out to sea and learn from professionals or stroll along the Carlsbad Sea Wall Trail with ice cream. It really does have it all and it’s easy to understand why this is considered one of the best beaches in Carlsbad.
If you’re one for a morning stroll with coffee, be sure to pop into Baba Coffee before heading to the beach.
Check out Coast Highway 101 for parking spaces. From there you’ll be able to access Carlsbad State Beach within a couple minutes walk.
Robert Frazee State Beach
Another gorgeous stretch of beach is Robert Frazee State Beach. You can access it from a hidden ramp between Carlsbad Boulevard and Pine Avenue. It’s actually right beside Carlsbad State Beach but doesn’t see nearly the visitors, which is a bonus for those seeking a quiet day out.
Some popular activities to do at Robert Frazee State Beach include running, swimming, and fishing. Plus surfing for those who know what they’re doing, the waves here can get pretty hectic.
During the day, there’s always a lifeguard on site and restrooms are open for the public if you need to change into your trunks.
There are some parking spaces around Oak Avenue and Ocean Street. If you can’t find any, consider parking at Tamarack Avenue. Be aware though, it’s just under a 50 minute walk.
South Carlsbad State Beach
Next up is the delightful South Carlsbad State Beach. Three miles long and located directly in front of the Cape Rey Carlsbad, there’s no better location to top up your tan.
People frequently visit this state beach for fishing and bird watching opportunities. Not to mention, accessibility to massive waves, which surfers will love.
Due to its location beside the Carlsbad State Campgrounds, it’s hugely popular among campers looking to pitch their tents and get their fire pits going. For a booking with no hookups, you can expect to pay between $35 – $50 per night. Just be sure to book in advance in order to guarantee a spot.
A safe place to park your vehicle is along the Pacific Coast Highway. If there’s no space, check out parking at North Ponto Beach and South Ponto Beach.
Carlsbad City Beach / Carlsbad Village Beach
Peacefully sitting along Ocean Street is enchanting Carlsbad City Beach. This spot is particularly adored by sunbathers and early risers out for a jog.
Boasting radiant white sands, deep blue waters, and intriguing sea shells, Carlsbad City Beach is like something from a postcard. When here, hire a paddle board to explore more of the coastline, set up a picnic with your loved ones, or just stroll at your own pace and allow the fresh sea breeze to wash over you.
If you’re not a confident swimmer, refrain from going out too far. There are no lifeguards operating here.
The beach has a few access points including Beech Avenue, Christiansen Way, Grand Avenue, and Carlsbad Village Drive. Free parking is available on Ocean Street.
North Ponto Beach
Situated north of South Carlsbad State Beach is the fabulous North Ponto Beach. This small piece of paradise is known for top water quality and minimal crowds.
Surfing is the main water sport of choice at North Ponto Beach due to excellent wave conditions. Some surf companies operate classes here, but they’re for more experienced wave catchers.
There’s a lovely boutique coffee house about a ten minute walk from North Ponto Beach called INVITA Café. Their nourishing breakfast options are amazing and will kick off your day the correct way.
Perched up on the hill above North Ponto Beach is a car park for visitors. Unfortunately, this lot can get busy.
South Ponto Beach
South Ponto Beach is even more beautiful and larger than North Ponto Beach. It’s geared toward those looking to spend their days involved in seaside fun.
South Ponto Beach is a great location for whale watching (during season) and there are plenty of fish to be caught here. Additional activities at South Ponto include volleyball, sunbathing, boogie boarding, swimming, and surfing. The beach caters to all kinds of people, young and old, it’s even lined with paved walking paths.
Free and paid parking spaces are available near South Ponto Beach. If you’re looking to dodge the small fee, the southbound lanes of the Coast Highway have free spots.
Terramar Beach
A hidden gem separating the Terramar neighborhood and Pacific Ocean is the narrow Terramar Beach.
When the tide is out, Terramar Beach is incredibly charming and offers a selection of activities, which include surfing, tide pooling, and sunbathing.
There’s a set of stairs by Carlsbad Boulevard which lead down to Terramar Beach. Just beware, access to the beach depends on the tide, the stairs may be under water.
Most park their vehicles near Warm Water Jetty Beach and walk south to Terramar Beach. If you’re lucky enough, you may find street parking even closer.
Warm Water Jetty Beach
While it doesn’t have the most conventional backdrop, Warm Water Jetty Beach still gets quite a few visitors. Lying in front of a power-generating plant, it gets its name from the warm water flowing from the plant into the ocean.
Warm Water Jetty Beach is mainly used by surfers, but you’ll often find locals out walking their dogs and the occasional sunbather when the weather’s nice.
There’s a nearby open-water lagoon, Agua Hedionda Lagoon, which is protected by the beach. The two are part of a wider ecological reserve in the area.
A convenient place to park near Warm Water Jetty Beach is down by Carlsbad Boulevard. It’s not far from the entrance to Agua Hedionda Lagoon.
Things To Know About Carlsbad Beaches
Carlsbad’s beaches are safe, but it’s important to be aware of your surroundings. The tide can come rushing in at short notice, which could put you at risk.
Always know where the lifeguard is stationed, just in case someone in your party is in need.
There’s no perfect time to visit one of the area’s beaches. It depends what you’re doing.
Taking your dog for a walk and need some fresh air? If so, the mornings and evenings are ideal.
Searching for sunshine and wishing to go for a dip? The afternoon would suit you better.
You can surf at most beaches in Carlsbad.
The southern end of the warm water jetty is an excellent spot for dodging the crowds and crashing against some insanely high waves.
North Ponto Beach’s water quality is outstanding, so if you’re looking for a dip, you should go there.
Carlsbad State Beach is really popular among families because of its size and choice of fun activities. You’ll have no problem keeping the little ones occupied here.
Carlsbad State Beach is the longest in the city, stretching four miles down the coast.
